Don’t make your trees fight for food and water!
When a tree is fighting to establish itself in a landscape, it needs all the help it can get. Maintaining a mulch layer around your tree is essential. This layer, covering the entire rootball helps maintain moisture and is not competition for food.
Often you see grass up to the base of a young tree and this can be detrimental during the early years of a tree. Grass and groundcover will rob your tree of the moisture to the roots and will gobble up much of the food that the trees are relying on.
If you do spray a herbicide to keep the grass and weeds out, steer clear of the “pre-emegent” products as they can inhibit root growth of non-target plants.
